Many readers and fans of the Eye of Saturn vampire series often ask me what’s the connection between Saturn and vampires. Well, let me explain… Most of us are familiar with Francisco Goya’s painting, Saturn Devouring His Son. This famous painting has become synonyms with vampires. It’s even depicted in book two of the Eye of Saturn, Between Heaven and Saturn. The god Saturn is the taskmaster, thought to be the god of this world and our judge. Saturn is about transformation—life, death, rebirth, immortality, and duality. Saturn is said to be both the giver and the taker and the teacher of our spiritual nature. Depicted as an old man, filled with wisdom, Saturn is often seen carrying a sickle, much like the grim reaper. Vampires are also about transformation. Vampires are immortals, having gone through the life, birth, death and rebirth cycle through the supernatural route. Vampires also teach us lessons about our spiritual side. Vampires are sensual, creatures of the night, hiding in the shadows and feeding on the blood of others. Mystics believe blood carries the soul. And many ancient Saturn rituals involve human sacrifices and the drinking of the blood of the sacrificed. Blood is the seat of the soul… The powerful symbolism of hiding in the shadows represents parts of the human condition we hide and try to deny. The shadow depicts our suppressed desires (sexual) and fears—fears of our own mortality. Saturn forces us to confront our fears, and embrace transformation, finding balance within ourselves. There is something called Saturn Returns which happens every 27-29 years in a person’s life. During which, a person experiences many trials and tribulations. This tough love brings about transformation. Vampires also represent when we are out of balance with our spiritual nature. Giving into our carnal nature. “The wages of sin is death.” Vampires are immortal, but dead—decaying—zombies in a sense. Are vampires evil and have lost their soul? In the Eye of Saturn series, Felipe struggles with being a vampire or in his case a lamsivetalak. He desperately yearns to reclaim his soul, his beloved Zaybeth, and his humanity. Felipe’s yearning to reclaim his soul begs the question, can the damned be saved? Humans by nature are both good and evil. Vampires tend to mirrors our own spiritual journey and finding balance is the key. Saturn is there guiding us. If we listen carefully to our spiritual guide, it will lead us to transform our darkness into a source of light. If we fail to do so, Saturn will make us repeat the process through Karma—birth, death, rebirth… Saturn is also the god of life, death, and immortality. One of the traits of vampires is immortality. Spiritual teachings tell us the soul is immortal and when a person dies—if they were good, their soul will transcend into Heaven—a place of peace, love, joy, and happiness. But the vampire’s immortality is actually a curse. It represents transhumanism. Living forever, unchanged in a world that is ever evolving, while not being truly human or alive. A vampire’s soul cannot transcend to Heaven, and is therefore in stagnation (damnation). Remember, Saturn is our spiritual father and represents Karma. The vampire is now trapped in an endless, zombie cycle of existence without a spiritual guide until it learns the Karma lesson(s) Saturn has put forth. In summary, the relationship between Saturn and vampires is multifaceted. Through an exploration of historical contexts, symbolism, religion and cultural variations, we gain insight into the ways these myths reflect and shape human spirituality.
